Used Car Extended Warranties

If you buy a used car be sure to ask specificially about what type of used car extended warranties are available for that particular model of vehicle.  You should also check to see if there is already an extended warranty in place. You should then purchase the extended warranty for your used car that is right for you based on what kind of warranty already comes with the used car. In some cases there may be no manufacturer’s auto warranty that is transferred to a new owner at all upon resale so you may end up having to buy quite a bit of additional coverage.

It is difficult to get full coverage with used car extended warranties. Most used car warranties only offer bumper-to bumper coverage for vehicles with less than fifty thousand miles on them.  If you buy a car with high mileage on it you may find yourself paying out of pocket for repairs if it breaks down. However as concerns about the environment mount there is the promise that warranties for cars with high mileage will become more comprehensive and also more widely available so there is less metal on our scrap heaps. Currently you can get used car warranties fro vehicles with up to 150,000 miles on the odometer.

If you buy a used car you need to have the auto checked thoroughly by a mechanic.  If for some reason this process is not easily facilitated for you then you should not buy that car.  You should also ask for a Vehicle History Report on the car. If it has salvage or junk title in it’s past you may not be able to get any kind of warranty for it.

If you are thinking of buying a used car then you need to buy a type of used car warranty known casually as “Big Ticket Item Coverage.”  This type of car warranty covers major items but often omit items such as radiators, engines, and ABS brakes.  To cover this type of thing you might have to purchase what is known as Bumper-to-Bumper auto warranty coverage, which will include more items.

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is to buy an auto warranty to cover parts for a used car that they have been informed might break down. A dealer may say that the car has had trouble with the engine several years ago but not recently. You should not buy that car. If that car breaks down within thirty days of you buying it then your warranty could be voided.  Even if your car was inspected fully by a mechanic on a lift before you bought it then the warranty can be void.  Most obligators don’t feel that they should have to fix a car with a pre-existing or problematic condition.  As a rule of thumb you should not file a claim for a used car within a sixty days of buying it or the obligator may think that you purchased the warranty specifically with the idea of making them pay for repairs to a used car.
